Andrew, you will be sorely missed. You were a wonderful godfather, a loyal and fun friend.

Andrew has been involved in my life for many years. As a boy, I used to enjoy going to see Andrew and Margaret, marvelling at his reel-to-reel tape deck and other sundry hi-fi, and was always impressed with what car he was driving (he loved a turbocharger). He was always generous and keen to explain things, which made him a perfect pre-reg supervisor when he took me under his wing in Woodbridge. He taught me so may things about Optometry and skills that I use all the time to this day. Andrew and Margaret were so generous with their time, both looking after me, and inviting me over for scrambled egg breakfasts! I loved the bike rides with Andrew out to country pubs with great beer and fantastic sticky toffee pudding. I’ll never forget spending most of a day with him one weekend auditioning speakers. I had found second hand pair of fabled Mission 753 floorstanders but couldn’t decide between them or another pair – they were both so good. We had such a great time listening to them and discussing them at length, but I had always wanted these Missions, so I bought those. Andrew must have enjoyed the day too, he bought the other pair! I still have my speakers, they still sound great, and I often think of that day. The world was a better place with Andrew in it, but I still have so much that he taught me both in my work and personal life that though he is gone, much of him is still with me and always will be.

Thoughts

I was lucky enough to have Andrew as my pre-reg supervisor back in1986 & continued working with him until he & Margaret made the move to Woodbridge several years later. His expertise, guidance, unique ways of explaining things & humour will stay with me forever. I shall never forget him answering the phone at work one time, whilst trying to introduce me to the new world of computers via games -saying "Sarah can't come to the phone right now - she's trying to land a rocket on the moon!" I am so glad that I managed to catch up with Andrew & Margaret several times in later years - especially visiting them both in Woodbridge along with Heather & Philippa (original A Field associates) in the summer of 2018 . The years may have marched on - but still the same Andrew we all love & remember, & still looking extremely dapper with his striking spectacle frame choice. He touched so many peoples lives for the better. We are all so grateful & I know his legacy will live on for many years to come.

Andrew was my boss and mentor from 1992 when he took the risk of employing me fresh from university. He and Margaret arranged accommodation for me and made me feel very welcome both at work and socially. I enjoyed listening to his views on life and people during the quiet times at work and loved his liberal use of many swear words. His interests in science, computing and optometry were a great inspiration to me. I continued to learn skills in Optometry from him many years after he helped me pass my profession qualifying exams. We enjoyed squash and table tennis together and he and Margaret kindly took us out for many special meals in and around Woodbridge. It is a great shame that I was unable to visit him over this last year and I am sorry that I did not get the chance to tell him myself how much he meant to me. Alex
